Media Day Previews 2008 County Open
Melwood Prince George's County Open Will Return on May 19-25
By PRESS INFORMATION OFFICER, Office of the County Executive
MITCHELLVILLE, MD - Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson said that the PGA's decision for the Nationwide Tour to be a stop in Prince George's County is a win-win-win for everyone involved at the Media Day event this week.
"We are so proud to host the Nationwide Tour for the second year in a row," Johnson said. "Together, we are bringing a magnificent event into the state, one that will benefit charity while showcasing, to thousands of people from all over, this great county and a championship facility worthy of a professional golf tournament.
Johnson was joined by elected officials, citizens, media representatives and other attendees who signed up on a first-come, first-serve basis for one of two rounds of golf. The event was designed to give the media and golf fans a preview of the golf course at the Country Club of Woodmore, where 156-top golfers will compete for a $650,000 purse.
The 2008 Melwood Prince George's County Open will return Woodmore on May 19-25. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) shares honorary co-chair duties with Prince George's County's own Fred Funk, an eight-time PGA TOUR winner.
More than just a professional sporting event, the Melwood Prince George's County Open is a week-long community event featuring a high school tournament and junior clinic, multiple Pro-Am events, a popular private sponsor's party at Six Flags America, and various social events.
Paul Claxton won last year's inaugural event and went on to earn his 2008 PGA Tour card when he finished 10th on the final money list.
